Prayer: Seeking the face of God in high places: It’s probably safe to say that most people within reach of these words are content to be “flatlanders.” After all, our area doesn’t exactly qualify as Rocky Mountain High. My family fits the local norm in this respect, except for a few days every summer.

Black Catholic: Newly-ordained permanent deacon Reverend Mr. James Mahoney: The African American Catholic community has been blessed by the ordination of a new permanent deacon. Rev. Mr. James Mahoney, a parishioner at Saint Benedict Church in Cluster 18, was ordained by Cardinal Justin Rigali on June 6, 2004.
Education: Cardinal praises future Catholic educators: Today, we gather at a moment when the Church sends you out to share in a teaching mission that is her own but that comes from the Lord. How grateful we are that this Alliance exists and benefits so many in Catholic education, both the leaders and the students themselves.
In the Parishes: This week, focus on Philadelphia North's Our Lady of Consolation Parish, and hear about what special devotions are observed, new ministries and parish history.

Blessed with two new bishops
“Remember always what Jesus says: ‘A good shepherd lays down his life for his sheep,’” were the words with which Cardinal Justin Rigali welcomed Bishops Joseph R. Cistone and Joseph P. McFadden on Wednesday, July 28, at the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul, to ordination to the College of Bishops.
Does Terri want to die? Attorneys for Michael Schiavo, the estranged husband of cognitively-disabled Terri Schindler-Schiavo, filed papers on July 26 accusing Florida Governor Jeb Bush of “force feeding Terri against her will.”
Kairos Prison Ministry: Releasing prisoners from the bonds of affliction
“This older gentleman was at my table during Kairos-2 [a Kairos weekend at SCI Chester prison in Pa.],” said John W. Vencius, a parishioner at Our Lady of Daylesford Abbey in Paoli, and Kairos volunteer. “He had little to say throughout the whole retreat. It was not until Sunday that he opened up.
Protecting marriage and children
The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation July 22 that limits federal court jurisdiction over same-sex marriage questions, but approval of the bill in the Senate is considered less likely.
The invisible addiction: Rose's story
It’s one of the most insidious of all addictions — because it's so invisible. “With alcoholism you have a drink, a smell, a stumbling person,” said Rose [not her real name] a Catholic from suburban Philadelphia and mother of two. “With this disease, these are clean-cut people. They look like they’re functioning. They look normal on the outside.”
Mario Dickerson finds his 'mission ground'
It’s been a long road of exciting twists and turns that has ultimately prepared Mario Dickerson — the new administrator of the Pontifical Missionary Societies of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia — for the vocation of marriage, and his position promoting the missionary work of the Church.

From frat boys to fathers: Sharing our personal journeys: If you were hit by a water balloon while walking to class at Temple University in the late 1980s, Father Steve McDermott wants to offer a big apology. You were very likely the victim of the Sigma Pi fraternity slingshot, which was used to launch the balloons from the roof of the fraternity house onto unsuspecting students. Story

How can you exert positive peer pressure? When was the last time you were “peer-pressured”? Positively peer-pressured? While home on summer vacation, I’ve had some time to really reflect upon the important things in life, and how I’ve discovered those things during the past two years of my collegiate life. Story
