Summer with Christ

Catholics who channel-surf for entertainment on hot summer days are likely to see their spiritual shepherd, Cardinal Justin Rigali, encouraging them to keep God in their summer plans.

Since the weekend of June 25-26, WPVI-TV 6 has been airing the Cardinal’s summertime spiritual message on weekends. The 30-second segment will also air on the weekends of July 30-31, and Aug. 6-7.

“During this season of relaxation and of vacations, include God in your summer plans,” the Cardinal says in the message, which was taped in the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul. “I invite you and your family to make time for prayer this summer, especially if you have drifted from the Lord and His Church.

“I ask that you reflect on God’s presence in your life. Pray. Read the Bible and attend Mass. Know that you are always welcome! Thank you and God bless you.”

With cutaways to different locations in the city, the segment also shows Philadelphians enjoying recreation and relaxation outdoors.

The message was taped and edited by Father Daniel J. Kearns, a school minister at Cardinal Dougherty High School, who frequently assists the Archdiocese with videography and video editing projects.

WPVI-TV 6 also broadcasts the Archdiocese’s weekly TV Mass at 5:30 a.m. Sundays. Channel 6 broadcast the Archdiocese’s first TV Mass 31 years ago, on July 7, 1974.
