Hawks roll over Roman By Bob Steiner CS&T Editorial and Sports Assistant Relying on the legs of sophomore running back Jamir Livingston, the St. Joseph’s Prep Hawks (3-1 overall, 1-0 Catholic League Red Division) rolled to a 41-0 win over the Roman Catholic Cahillites (1-3 overall, 0-1 Catholic League Red Division) on Friday, Sept. 23. Livingston entered the game after starting running back, senior John Shaw, suffered a broken left leg when he was tackled at the end of lengthy run on the Hawks’ first offensive possession of the game. Following Shaw’s injury, the Hawks capped off the 12-play drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge by senior fullback Ryan Bradley. The Cahillites were unable to capitalize on a first-quarter interception by junior defensive back Dominique Joseph as the Hawks’ staunch defense forced the Cahillites to punt. The Cahillites recorded their second turnover of the game on the Hawks’ next possession, a fumble forced by Joseph, which senior linebacker Ryan McAdams quickly pounced on. The Cahillites’ offense, though, again could not take advantage of the opportunity, having to punt once more. After junior quarterback Chris Whitney connected with senior tight end Matt Leddy for a 54-yard pass down the left sideline, Livingston scored his first touchdown of the night — a five-yard run that put the Hawks up by a score of 14-0, with the extra point provided by sophomore kicker Tim Edger. The Hawks extended their lead following a 13-yard touchdown pass from Whitney to senior wide receiver Tom Elliot, who ran a shallow crossing route from the slot on the right side. St. Joseph’s Prep thus led Roman Catholic at halftime, 21-0. The third quarter began rather inauspiciously for the Cahillites, as sophomore quarterback Chris Johnson was picked off by senior Hawk linebacker Josh Howley on their opening possession. A two-yard touchdown run by Livingston, and the point after, put the Hawks up 28-0. Livingston added another touchdown on the Hawks’ next drive, a scamper around the left side that tacked on another six points. The extra point was blocked, although the Hawks were already more than comfortably ahead by a score of 34-0. Another third-quarter touchdown run by junior running back Bradley Wright was the Hawks’ final trip into the end zone for the evening. Senior linebacker Rockeed McCarter registered a sack for Roman Catholic in a bright spot for the Cahillites’ defense. Although it will be without the services of Shaw, St. Joseph’s Prep looks to win the fourth of its first five games this season as it hosts the Archbishop Ryan Raiders (2-2 overall, 1-0 Catholic League Red Division) this week. The Hawks only loss this season came in overtime against The Gilman School of Maryland in a non-league game in week three.
