Sister M. Margarella O’Neill dies at age 86


Franciscan Sister M. Margarella O’Neill, who served as president of Neumann College in Aston from 1983 to 1989, died Saturday, March 18, 2006. She was 86. Her funeral Mass was scheduled to be celebrated at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 23 at Assisi House, the Aston retirement community for the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia.

Sr. Mary Annette
Sister Mary Annette, O.P., the former Mary Catherine Shuman, who spent 51 years as a nursing sister and for many years as administrator at Sacred Heart Home for Incurable Cancer, died Feb. 24 at the age of 82.

Sister Patricia Brennan
Sister Patricia Ann Brennan, S.S.J., the former Sister Robert Loretta Brennan, died March 6, 2006 at the age of 72. Born in Pottsville, Sister Patricia entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1952. Sister Patricia served in the Philadelphia and Newark Archdioceses and the Allentown, Harrisburg and Venice, Fla., Dioceses. The funeral Mass was celebrated March 13 at St. Joseph Villa, Flourtown. Burial was at the community cemetery. Sister Patricia was the sister of Loretta Womer, Margaret Wynosky and Robert Brennan, and sister-in-law of Jack Rich. She was preceded in death by a sister, Terry Rich, and a brother-in-law, Franklin Womer. Also survived by nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews and members of her congregation.

Sister Elizabeth Daley
Sister Elizabeth Daley, S.S.J., the former Sister Elizabeth James, died Feb. 22, 2006. She was 71. Born in Heckscherville, Sister Elizabeth entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1961. She served in the Philadelphia, Baltimore and Newark Archdioceses and the Allentown and Metuchen Dioceses. The funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 24 at St. Joseph Villa, Flourtown. Burial was at the community cemetery. Sister Elizabeth was the sister of Edward Daley. She was preceded in death by brothers Joseph, John and James, and sisters Mary F. Daley and Helen T. O’Connor. Also survived by nieces, nephews and members of her congregation.

Marie Dougherty

Marie Dougherty (born Collins), 102, died Feb. 17, 2006. She was the wife of the late William Dougherty. Born in Philadelphia, she was a 1922 graduate of John W. Hallahan High School and a member of the Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul Parish. The funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 22 at St. Francis Country House, Darby. Burial was at SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Springfield. Surviving are nieces and nephews, and grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, Joseph, and a sister, Elizabeth Kane.

Sister Catherine Lafferty

Sister Catherine Lafferty, a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur, the former Sister Mary Charles, died March 4, 2006 at the age of 80. Sister Catherine Lafferty was a 1942 graduate of West Catholic Girls’ High School. She was a member of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur for 63 years. She was a former member of Most Blessed Sacrament Parish and taught from 1967 to 1970 at Notre Dame High School, Moylan. She served for 15 years at Villa Julie College, Stevenson, Md. From 1976 to 1979, she was in the congregation’s communications office in Rome. She was in residence at Villa Julie Residence in Stevenson. The funeral Mass was celebrated March 8 at Stevenson. Burial was at the congregation cemetery. Surviving are a sister, Sister Rose Lafferty, SND de N; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Lafferty, and members of her congregation.

Sister Catherine Lengle
Sister Catherine Lengle, S.S.J., formerly Sister James Laboure, died Feb. 22, 2006. She was 68. Sister Catherine entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1955. She served in the Philadelphia Archdiocese and the Harrisburg Diocese. She also served in Liberia. The funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 27 at St. Joseph Villa, Flourtown. Burial was at the community cemetery. She was the sister of Philip, Robert, Allen, Louise Chicora and the late James Lengle; sister-in-law of Mary Lengle. Also survived by nieces and nephews, and members of her congregation.

Sister Celine Marie
Sister Celine Marie, I.H.M., the former Marion Murphy, died March 3, 2006. She was 96. Born in Philadelphia, Sister Celine Marie served in the Philadelphia Archdiocese in elementary and secondary education. She also taught in the Allentown and Harrisburg Dioceses. The funeral Mass was celebrated March 8 at Camilla Hall, Immaculata. Burial was at Immaculata. She is survived by a nephew, James Eagle, and by members of her congregation. She was predeceased by a sister, Eleanor Eagle, and a cousin, Sister Mary Josepha McFadden.

Sister Mary O’Connor
Sister Mary Audrey O‘Connor, S.S.J., formerly Rita O’Connor, died March 5, 2006 at the age of 83. Born in Bridgeport, Sister Mary Audrey entered the Sisters of St. Joseph in 1940. She served in the Philadelphia, Newark and Washington Archdioceses and the Allentown Diocese. The funeral Mass was celebrated March 8 at St. Joseph Villa, Flourtown. Burial was at the community cemetery. She was the sister of Edward, John and Sister Daniel Margaret O’Connor, and sister-in-law of Doris, Lee, Genevieve and Dolores O’Connor. She was preceded in death by brothers James and William O’Connor. Also survived by nieces, nephews and members of her congregation.

Sister Gertrude Regina

Sister Gertrude Regina, O’Carm., a Carmelite Sister, formerly Elizabeth Ann Maloney, died Feb. 3, 2006. She was 73. Born in Philadelphia, she was a 1950 graduate of Little Flower High School. She served at Sacred Heart Manor, Germantown; Garvey Manor, Hollidays Burg, Pa.; Mary Manning Walsh Home, New York City, N.Y., and St. Rita Home, Columbus, Ohio. The funeral Mass was celebrated Feb. 6 at Sacred Heart Manor. Surviving are a sister, Rita McGough; a niece, and three nephews.
