Prayer: Martha,
Martha: A question of priorities
Sometimes,
having heard a Gospel message repeated over the years, we begin
to take its meaning for granted. Given the homey nature of the narrative
of Jesus and Martha, it is even more understandable to do so in
that case. A closer look, however, may reveal more than meets the
eye.
Black
Catholics: After
years of service, Carolyn Jenkins retires from St. Peter Claver Center
Anyone who knows about the work of the St. Peter Claver Center for
Evangelization, knows that the force behind it has always been Carolyn
Jenkins. Profile: Second-grader
designates first Communion gifts for shut-ins
Grace Eileen McGuire of Conshohocken is only 8 years old. But she
has compassion and generosity far beyond her years.
Grace is a second-grader at Norwood-Fontbonne Academy, a Catholic
preparatory school in Chestnut Hill, where she celebrated her first
holy Communion in April. A party for family and friends followed in
Lafayette Hill, and that event was much like other first Communion
celebrations all around the nation — with one exception. The
invitations specified that there be no gifts for Grace. Vocations: ‘God
or Girl’ series is ‘good tool’ for discerning vocations A&E’s
recent reality miniseries, “God or the Girl,” took a look
at four Catholic men who felt they might have a call to the priesthood,
but were uncertain whether they had what it takes to become a priest.

Instead, they are participating in a week-long hunger awareness
program, “The Food Stamp Challenge.”
Sisters

Sisters of Mercy, the largest congregation of Roman Catholic sisters
in the United States, are making changes.
The Franciscan way:
Hands-on work with poor in community Some of Philadelphia’s poor can’t
believe all the help they receive at the Full of Grace Community Outreach
Center. A
day in Assisi Last
week, I took the train from Rome to Assisi for a day of pilgrimage,
along with Father Matthew Lamoureux, M.I.C., a young priest from my
community who was visiting Rome for the first time with his parents.
