Black
Catholics: Following
the Holy Spirit: A history of black priests in the Archdiocese (Part
2 of 2)
During the 1960s, Saint Charles adapted some of its programs to accommodate
its black seminarians. It opened up cultural activities to the black
community, sent seminarians to work in inner-city parishes, instituted
courses focusing on black concerns, and brought in black guest speakers
and faculty to teach. All of that made the seminary environment more
welcoming to black students, and increasing the number of applicants
and guiding them through the completion of their studies to ordination.
