Prayer:
A blessing in disguise

In Fall 1986, God blessed me with a situation that should have been a depressing experience. I found a human hair in my food. That was a blessing in disguise.

Parenting:
Restoring the family budget
As the Christmas season closes, the cardinal-colored bows, pink lights and magenta ribbons have all been stowed away safely for the next eleven months. But for some of us, red may still be a dominant color at home as looming credit card bills come due in the next few weeks.

Profile:
From local schoolboy to Vatican official
Albin J. Grous was 6 years old when he first thought about becoming a priest. “It occurred in St. John Cantius Church … in a pew on the right, side aisle toward the rear of the church.”

Cardinal spreads Christmas message to the imprisoned
The grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ flowed down to the assembled congregation at Philadelphia’s beautiful Cathedral Basilica of SS. Peter and Paul through the ministry of Cardinal Justin Rigali at no less than three Christmas Masses this year. The grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ flowed down in even greater abundance to the assembled congregation at Philadelphia’s women’s prison through the ministry of Cardinal Rigali at a December 22 Christmas Mass in the spartan gymnasium of Northeast Philadelphia’s Riverside Correctional Facility.

A shrine reborn at Our Lady of Hope
Some traditions should never be allowed to die. One which did die, at least for a time, was reborn Dec. 23 when Cardinal Justin Rigali blessed the Shrine of the Holy Crib at Our Lady of Hope Church on North Broad Street.

St. Katherine’s meets St. Catherine
St. Catherine of Siena came to Torresdale’s St. Katherine of Siena Church on Dec. 7.

U.S. priest vocations holding steady
While priestly vocations continue to increase in some parts of the world, overall numbers in the United States, including the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, are holding steady.

Father John Nordeman: Living and teaching the faith
It’s true not all men are called to the priesthood, but Father John J. Nordeman, ordained in 2001, was certain of his calling. It is also true not all men — even priests — are called to be teachers. So when Father Nordeman was asked to accept an assignment as a high school teacher three years ago, he felt some trepidation.

The many faithful ‘Josephs’ of Villa St. Joseph
“You live your lives under the patronage of St. Joseph,” who was a just and humble man.

Officially retired, these priests still have jobs to do
The last thing a person expects while sitting around a dining room table with a group of retired priests is to realize how difficult it can be to have a serious conversation. Between the constant jokes and laughter, and the good-natured pot-shots, guests are advised to check their expectations at the door and just get prepared for a lively visit.

Building faith in Milmont Park
Our Lady of Peace Parish in Milmont Park, founded in 1922 , is 84 years old — but the beautiful church, where Cardinal Rigali celebrated an anniversary Mass on Dec. 10, is 50 years young.
