Adele Healy
Adele Healy (formerly Smith) of Overbrook died May 17, 2007 after suffering a debilitating stroke in November. She was born in Altoona, Pa., and was one of eight children. After her family relocated to Philadelphia, she attended West Catholic High School and was captain of the 1935 basketball team. On graduation, she was awarded an athletic scholarship to Beaver College and later earned her bachelor’s degree in physical education from Temple University. She taught and coached in many of the schools within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, including St. Hubert High School, John W. Hallahan High School, St. Vincent’s Orphanage, West Catholic High School, Notre Dame, Moylan and Mater Misericordia in Merion. She married John Healy in 1952 and settled in the Overbrook section of Philadelphia, where they raised their four children. She was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, serving as an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist and a volunteer at Saunders House. A funeral Mass was celebrated May 21 at Our Lady of Lourdes. She is survived by her husband of 55 years, John; four children, Anne Ayella, Kate Willcox, John and Bill, and 11 grandchildren.
