Father Robert P. Hanlon
Father Robert P. Hanlon, O.S.F.S., died of heart failure on Jan. 23, 2008
at DeSales Center in Childs, Md. A graduate of Northeast Catholic High
School in the class of 1943, he earned a bachelor’s degree from
Niagara University, N.Y. During World War II, he served as a bombardier
on B-17s in Europe and flew 35 missions. He was awarded an Air Medal with
five Oak Leaf Clusters. After his discharge, he entered the Oblates of
St. Francis DeSales and was ordained in 1957. He taught social studies
and religion at Northeast Catholic and Father Judge high schools in Northeast
Philadelphia for 38 years before retiring in 1995. He also ministered
to the parishioners of St. Anne Parish, Philadelphia. A funeral Mass was
celebrated at the DeSales Center on Jan. 26 and burial followed at the
adjacent cemetery. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday,
April 12 at St. Anne Church. He is survived by two sisters, Kathleen Chorlton
and Elaine Vadden, and several nieces and nephews.
Marie T. Campbell
Marie T. Campbell, formerly Cooney, died Feb. 20, 2008. She was 89. Born
in Philadelphia, she was a 1937 graduate of West Catholic High School.
She attended Misericordia School of Nursing; the University of Pennsylvania,
where she earned a bachelor’s degree in nursing education, and Temple
University, where she earned a master’s degree in education. During
World War II she served as a 1st lieutenant U.S. Army nurse. She was the
supervisor of nurses in the Philadelphia school system for 28 years. She
belonged to the St. Kevin Nurse Ministry, Legion of Mary, Our Lady’s
Rosary Makers, the American Red Cross and the American Legion. She was
predeceased by her husband, Leonard J. Campbell, and her brother Francis
J. Cooney. A funeral Mass was celebrated on March 15 at St. Kevin Church,
Springfield, with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery. She is survived by numerous
nieces, nephews and cousins.
Sister Mary Zephyrine Ustaszewska
Sister Mary Zephyrine Ustaszewska, formerly Laura Ustaszewska, died Feb.
21, 2008. She was 93, and a religious for 75 years. Born in Maryland,
she entered the Felician Sisters in Lodi, N.J., in 1932. She earned a
bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Seton Hall University
in New Jersey and a master’s degree in theology from St. Bonaventure
University in New York. She was an elementary and secondary educator in
schools staffed by the Felician Sisters in New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania,
including St. Laurentius School in Philadelphia. From 1988 to 2004 she
also ministered at St. Ignatius Nursing Home in Philadelphia. A funeral
Mass was celebrated on Feb. 25 at the Felician Sisters’ infirmary
chapel. Burial was in the community cemetery in Lodi. She is survived
by her sister, who is also a Felician Sister, Sister Mary Joanne Ustaszewska,
as well as members of her extended family.
Arthur L. Hennessy Jr.
Arthur L. Hennessy Jr. died on March 4, 2008. He was 82. A U.S. Navy veteran,
a retired history professor at La Salle University and a pro-life advocate,
he was elected as a delegate for Democratic Party national conventions
in 1968 and 1976, and ran for a congressional seat in Bucks County in
1970. He was on the board of supervisors of Upper Southampton Township
from 1978 to 1984, and was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church
in Southampton. He was predeceased by his wife, Maude C. (formerly McColl)
and his daughter, Patricia. A funeral Mass was celebrated at Our Lady
of Good Counsel Church, Southampton. Burial was at St. John Neumann Cemetery.
He is survived by his son, Arthur L. Hennessy III, and two grandsons.
Sister Filomena Trotta
Sister Filomena Trotta, M.P.F., died March 6, 2008 at Kessler Memorial
Hospital, Hammonton, N.J. She was 90. Born in Baltimore, Md., she entered
the Religious Teachers of Filippini in 1939. She earned her diploma at
the Villa Walsh Normal School, a bachelor’s degree in elementary
education from Seton Hall University and a master’s degree from
Canisius College in New York. She taught in New Jersey, New York, Connecticut,
Ohio and Pennsylvania, including St. Nicholas of Tolentine School in Philadelphia.
A funeral Mass was celebrated on March 10 in St. Lucy Chapel, Villa Walsh,
Morristown, N.J. She is survived by three sisters, Josephine Cole, Marie
Petracca and Sister Armanda Trotta, M.P.F. She is also survived by two
nieces and a nephew.
Peter Paranzino
Peter Paranzino, LaSalle University’s barber for more then 65 years,
died on March 7, 2008. He was 94. His son, Dominick, and granddaughter,
Christina, are both LaSalle graduates. He is predeceased by his wife,
Lillian. The funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Lucy Church, Roxborough.
He is also survived by his grandson and two sisters.
Thomas M. Lydon
Thomas M. Lydon of Havertown died on March 10, 2008 at Taylor Hospice,
Ridley Park. He was 80. Born in Philadelphia to the late Michael and Julia
Lydon (formerly Casey) he graduated from Southeast Catholic High School.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served his country during World
War II in Austria. He was a steamship agent for the Robinson & Mastrangelo
company in Philadelphia for 52 years and was also active with Project
HOPE at St. Dorothy Church, Drexel Hill. A funeral Mass was celebrated
on March 15 at St. Dorothy Church. Interment was at SS. Peter and Paul
Cemetery, Springfield. He is survived by his wife, Clare (formerly Varley);
brother and sisters, Kathleen Joyce, Julia Russell, James Lydon, Noreen
Wimmell and Theresa Lydon; nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews,
and great-grandnephews and nieces.
