Obispos otorgan 4 milliones de dólares para Iglesia en Latinoamérica
WASHINGTON — El Subcomité sobre la Iglesia en Latinoamérica de la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Estados Unidos (USCCB) aprobó en junio la cantidad adicional de 1.57 millones de dólares en ayudas a proyectos pastorales en veintiún países de América Latina y el Caribe. Con esta cantidad se habrán adjudicado cerca de cuatro millones de dólares en lo que ve de año para este propósito.
Los fondos proporcionan una ayuda esencial a la Iglesia en Latinoamérica y el Caribe al otorgar fondos para la formación de seminaristas y religiosos, educación religiosa, catequesis, pastoral juvenil, evangelización, formación y ministerios laicales, formación para el diaconado e investigación. Las ayudas permiten a los católicos en estas regiones—quienes a menudo son ricos en la fe pero carecen de muchos recursos materiales—participar más plenamente como discípulos en la vida de la Iglesia y responder a su llamado a la misión.
Entre las decisiones sobre fondos tomadas en la reunión de junio destacan:
— 135.000 dólares para programas de pastoral juvenil que continúen evangelizando y dando participación a los jóvenes católicos en Ecuador, Costa Rica y República Dominicana.
— 62.000 dólares para asistencia a programas de ministerio rural en Chile, Brasil y Perú.
— Cerca de 100.000 dólares para apoyar el ministerio pastoral con familias, incluyendo — 15.000 dólares para ayudar a que expertos que trabajan en centros que promueven métodos de Planificación Natural de la Familia (PNF) puedan asistir al Congreso Pan-Americano sobre PNF que tendrá lugar en Honduras del 22 al 27 de julio.
El Subcomité también aprobó ayudas para apoyar algunos eventos importantes para Latinoamérica, incluyendo:
— 105.000 dólares para delegados al 49º Congreso Eucarístico Internacional que tuvo lugar en Québec, Canadá, en junio. Los fondos se otorgaron para ayudar a asistir al Congreso a participantes de Argentina, Brasil, Cuba, Colombia, El Salvador, Ecuador y Paraguay. También se otorgaron fondos al comité organizador para que apoyara a otros participantes de América Latina y el Caribe.
— 20.000 dólares fueron destinados a ayudar al 3er Congreso Americano de Misiones (CAM 3) que se celebrará en Quito, Ecuador, en agosto. El Congreso Misionero servirá para lanzar la “Gran Misión Continental” que implementará las recomendaciones de la 5ª Conferencia General del Episcopado de América Latina y el Caribe que tuvo lugar en Aparecida, Brasil, en 2007.
Desde el comienzo del año, el Subcomité ha aprobado fondos para un total de 246 proyectos por un valor de 3 millones 827 mil dólares (3.827.000).

U.S. bishops approve $4 million for pastoral projects in Latin America
WASHINGTON — The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Subcommittee on the Church in Latin America approved in June an additional $1.57 million in grants to 105 pastoral projects in 21 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean for a total of $4 million in the first half of this year.
These funds assist the Church in Latin America and the Caribbean by providing essential support for seminary and religious formation, religious education, catechesis and youth ministries, evangelization, lay formation and ministry, diaconate training and research. The grants enable Catholics in these regions — who are rich in faith, but often lacking in material resources — to participate more fully in the life of the Church as disciples and respond to their call to mission.
Highlights of the June funding decisions include:
— $135,000 for youth ministry programs that continue to evangelize and engage young Catholics in countries including Ecuador, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic;
— $62,000 to assist rural ministry in Chile, Brazil and Peru;
— Nearly $100,000 to support family pastoral ministry, including $15,000 to help experts who work in centers that promote Natural Family Planning (NFP) methods attend the third Pan-American Congress on NFP to be held in Honduras July 22-27.
The Subcommittee also approved grants to support important events in Latin America including:
— $105,000 for the 49th International Eucharistic Congress that took place in Quebec, Canada, in June. Funds were awarded to assist participants from Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Colombia, El Salvador, Ecuador and Paraguay in attending the Congress. Funds were also provided to the organizing committee to support other Latin American and Caribbean participants.
— $20,000 to support the third all-America Mission Congress (CAM 3) in Quito, Ecuador, in August. The Mission Congress will be used to kick off the “Gran Misión Continental” which will implement the recommendations of the 5th Conference of Latin American and Caribbean Episcopate held in Aparecida, Brazil, in 2007.
Since the beginning of the year, the Subcommittee has approved a total of 246 projects for $3,827,000. Annually, this Subcommittee of the USCCB Committee on National Collections awards 500-600 grants over three grant cycles. In 2007, 562 grants were awarded for a total of $7,722,314. This was the largest number of grants ever distributed in a single year.
